Aimed at the discipline construction and undertaking development need, the author tries to track and review major events for the historical evolution of protection against ionizing radiation in China. Issues emphatically elaborated include the need for creating a new era of nuclear science and technology, doing from much-needed talent fostering, establishing and perfecting of relevant state authorities and corresponding management system, setting up and developing of relevant professional research and teaching institutions, establishing and constantly improving regulation and standard systems, and establishing of professional associations and journals to promote the prosperity of academic exchanges. An overview of the main achievements in the field is then presented, so as to encourage future development. To throw out a minnow to catch a whale hereby, the author ventures to initiate discussion of relatedhistorical experiences, and looks forward to being able to contribute to sum-up and obtaining of valuable enlightenment, thus to promote the further development for the discipline and undertaking of protection against ionizing radiation in China.

Cement solidification is commonly usedfor liquid radioactive waste treatment in operating NPPs, and most plants use CD1-type concrete container to package the resulted waste form. The volume of CD1-type container itself is, however, so large that the final waste volume and waste disposal burden are both increased. In line with the concept of waste minimization, the feasibility of using self-developed steel drum to replace CD1-type concrete container is explored, without changing the process equipment and plant structures. Verification tests show that the new type steel drum meets the performance requirements and can be workable in the existing solidification system, and the final waste volume is reduced by 43%.

The situation and existing problems ofregulation work for NPP effluent monitoring in China are summarized. Combined with successful experiences in the field of environmental radiation monitoring and the requirements of the new environmental protection law, objectives for nuclear safety and radioactive pollution prevention and control in the 12th five-year plan and 2020 vision are analyzed. Specific goals and suggestions are proposedfor the regulation system building.

Volume measurement is introduced to overcome shortcomings of mass measurement in radioactive spent resin cementation system, which include liability of radioactive contamination, testing difficulties of weighting cell, high maintenance costs and so on. Results indicate that volume measurement is feasible for radioactive spent resin cementation. The replacement is verified to be acceptable.

The reduction of collective dose is aconstant challenge for all nuclear power plants, while the deposited source termis the main contribution to collective dose. In this paper, the categories andthe generation mechanisms of activated corrosion products were introduced, and the status of source term measurement at home and abroad was presented. Source term characterization for maintenance of NPPs was also discussed with respect to the reduction of collective dose and radiation protection optimization.
