Abstract: Based on the characteristics of spent fuel cargo packages and the operation process of transporting spent fuel at nuclear power plant wharfs, in consideration with the parameters and radiation protection requirements of the first dedicated ship for transporting spent fuel in China, radiation protection requirements for transporting spent fuel at nuclear power plant wharfs are proposed. On this basis, radiation detection and evaluation of spent fuel transportation at the wharf were carried out from three aspects: the radiation operation area of the wharf, the cargo holding area of the dedicated ship, and the personnel involved in the transportation at wharf. The radiation exposure dose of different operation positions during the loading and unloading of six packages in a single transportation was calculated and compared with the measured values during the spent fuel transportation process. The results were far below the radiation limit for professional personnel in GB 18871. Therefore, the radiation protection requirements and measures proposed in this article for the transportation of spent fuel at nuclear power plant wharfs are reasonable and effective.
