Abstract: A sliding mode rate damping controller is designed for underactuated spacecraft with one of the three axes actuators invalid. The stabilization problem of the system is addressed, and the disturbance rejection performance is analyzed. The guideline of tuning parameters for the controller is presented. By regarding product of inertia as external disturbance, the problem of designing a controller for underactuated spacecraft with non-diagonal inertia matrix is resolved. The application aspects are considered, such as the switching feature of thrusters, the saturation characteristics of rate gyroscope, the existence of external disturbance and the non-diagonal property of the inertia matrix. Numerical simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and practicability of the designed controller.
